The body mass index (
BMI ) is an index measurement for evaluating weight. It is
calculated by dividing the mass by the square of the height. The
correct formula is shown below.
To use the BMI
calculator, please enter your weight in whole kilograms (rounded)
and your height in cm into the following formula. The body mass
index is then displayed. An evaluation of the BMI follows.

BMI – body mass index
calculator
The body mass index, BMI for
short, is an important number for scientists and physicians. Many
people have dealt with this number, voluntarily or involuntarily.
The BMI, discovered by Adolphe Quetelet, evaluates the body weight
of a person. The main benefit of the index is to point out and warn
of possible overweight. The risk of being overweight is increasing
among people worldwide at a rapid pace. The BMI takes into account
the individual’s weight, but not the composition of muscle and fat
tissue. The index is calculated very simply. The actual weight is
divided by the square of the body height. This calculation produces
a number that gives information about the weight.
If the body mass index is below 19, the person
is underweight. From 19 to 25, the weight is absolutely normal and
not conspicuous. Starting with a BMI of 25, caution is recommended
and a slight tendency to being overweight established. Numbers above
30 indicate problems and must be taken seriously, since they are
already in the obese range. The BMI takes the age of the person into
account. The normal value of those under 30 years old lies below
that of older people. In addition, gender plays an important role.
The BMI among men is considerably higher than among women, which is
due to the greater muscle mass. Constant monitoring of weight is
important, especially among children and adolescents. Many of them
tend to be slightly overweight even at a young age, which has a
negative impact on bones and development.
